Sigh. I can see this coming. Ever since Michael ‘Giraffe’ Shoemaker thought about stepping in to replace Massa and then didn’t on account of his neck, the press has been all over one thing, and one thing only. Believe you me, we haven’t heard the last of The Neck by a long stretch (no pun intended).
Take the other day. Hardly has the Saviour of All Germans done two laps in Jerez, or the Kraut press heaves a collective sigh of relief: ‘The Neck Holds’. Apart from the odd twinge, apparently. Oh my. Verdammt nochmal! Zum Teufel! Es ist der Scheissnacken wieder!
Mark my words: we will hear a lot more about The Neck this season. Ad nauseam, as they say in Greek. Or in the words of my countryman William Buster Yeats:
Turning and turning in the widening circuit
The driver cannot hear the principal;
Things fall apart; the neck cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the Krauts.
Or something to that effect. Well, at least now I’m not the only one who sticks his neck out around here.
