When in Rome, do as the Romans do

… which means, organise a race. Let’s face it, if you’ve ever seen Roman traffic – it was a matter of time. Rome just had to get a Grand Prix.

The blokes in Monza are pretty nervous about it. Think Rome might replace them after their contract runs out. This is of course my favourite thing in the world: I positively love nervous race organisers. Makes for great negotiation tactics, involving short and curlies and such.

According to Gianni Alemanno, Rome’s mayor who is now my new best friend, EUR is the best place for the Rome Grand Prix. Only thing is, we’ve got to settle on the name. Italian Grand Prix is taken, Alemanno has suggested Grand Prix of the Roman Empire. Sounds great, but reminds me a little of rise and fall and all that. I told him I’d sleep on it.

The only remaining issue is to get the current residents to agree. Which should be no problem because nobody lives there. It’s an office district.

I’ve already called Hermann Tilke to take a look at the place, probably needs to do some rebuilding but nothing drastic – maybe an office block or two.
